2015 CADCA Mid-Year 1

DEXTER, MI – On August 4th nearly 200 youth from around the world attended the National Youth Leadership Initiative (NYLI) as a part of the 2015 Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) Mid-Year Training Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. Four Dexter High School students, Joseph S., Gabe B., Andrew G., and Drake R., attended to learn how to become drug prevention advocates and powerful community leaders.

The students participated in 3 days of extensive training in the NYLI Key Essentials courses focusing on the foundational tools needed to take the first steps in solving their communities’ problems around drugs, underage drinking, prescription drugs and other social ills. Andrew, one of our SRSLY summer interns, said “The CADCA Mid-Year Training was a great trip. It was awesome to meet people from all over the country and world while being able to learn important information that can be applied to my community.”

Drake, a second time attendee said “As a group we learned how to prioritize and tackle the biggest substance abuse problems in Dexter. Through CADCA’s Strategic Prevention Framework we were able to break down the problem of underage drinking and come up with specific ways that SRLSY as a coalition could change Dexter teen’s attitudes towards alcohol such as education, hosting events and other means.”

The students will continue to work on their plan as the school year begins and recruit other students to join them. Some of their ideas to combat underage drinking are brochures and posters geared toward parents, implementing Project Sticker Shock again at local stores leading up to Homecoming, more marketing aimed at increasing awareness of Dexter’s laws around hosting parties, and potentially an After Party for Homecoming and Prom.

We are always looking for youth and adults to get involved. To learn more about what’s happening with SRSLY, check out our website www.srslydexter.org or email the SRSLY Dexter Program Coordinator, Stephanie Jacques at Stephanie@srslydexter.org.
